![]() ![]() There's very little use case for it and most users will probably not notice it.Īnother change that is very useful is for those Slack channels that aren't always needed. It can be stoped and saved if need be, as you would with an email, the only problem we had with this was that it isn't especially useful. You can draft messages in a more convenient way than you would usually on the platform. There's also a new 'compose' button inside the navigation bar, which has a more email-like quality. ![]() It now works as more of a central hub for mentions, message reactions, files and apps - all in one place, ready to reference. The biggest change was to the navigation bar, which has been loaded with new functions. Slack Review: User InterfaceĪt the start of 2020, Slack overhauled its user interface and brought in a number of efficiencies. You can invite colleagues - and guests if your subscription tier supports it - via both the web interface and stand-alone clients, but you'll need the web admin console to grant them roles, set their permissions and configure which settings - such as inviting others and adding to the channel's custom emoji selection - are available to users. If you suspect an admin account has been compromised, you can also force everyone to create new passwords. Security options include enforced two-factor authentication for all workspace users, configurable session settings and, depending on your subscription, single sign-on via Google or your preferred SAML 2.0 platform, such as Microsoft Azure. However, Slack is extremely well documented, which takes a lot of the pain out of finding the setting you're looking for. The admin interface feels rather busy and you may find that you do a lot of scrolling and tab-switching to find everything until you know where all the options are - we'd have appreciated an integrated search function. Here, you can do everything from setting and resetting your workspace's name, URL and icon to managing your members' status and admin privileges, creating user groups, viewing analytics and adding custom apps and integrations. ![]() While Slack has a wealth of dedicated chat apps, all configuration tasks, whether of your personal account or your workspaces, has to be done via a web browser. Slack review: ConfigurationĬreating a new Slack workspace is just a matter of visiting a website, entering the email address you want to administrate it from, and coming up with a name. This becomes a lot more useful on Slack's paid tiers, as even a dozen users can rapidly generate 10,000 messages. If you're a member of more than one Slack workspace - for example if you have several businesses or teams with their own Slack accounts - then these can be displayed down a pane at the far left for ease of switching.Īt the top right, a search box makes it easy to trawl through your current workspace's available message history, users and channels. Slack has had integrated voice and video calling since 2016 (depending on your platform), with one-to-one calls available to all tiers and group VoIP and video chats of up to 15 people for paying users, complete with interactive screen sharing features. At the bottom, you'll see options to add apps or connect any third-party integrations that have been configured for the workspace. At the top, you'll see the name of your workspace alongside a pulldown that gives you access to your user preferences and online status. On the left, a sidebar shows all the channels you're a member of, threads - replies to a specific group chat message - that you're participating in, and any members you're having direct message chats with. App notifications also appear if someone you in a group channel or sends you a direct message. ![]() You can also set up group tags, allowing you to a pre-selected subset of users with a single tag. A large chat pane allows everyone to talk amongst themselves, using Twitter-style mentions to get one another's attention as needed, including an option to notify everyone in a channel. On joining, users are invited to set up a profile and are then dropped into your Slack workspace's #general channel - or any other channels you've set as default. The most conspicuous of these is dark mode, which only the mobile apps currently benefit from. Consistency of behaviour and interface between platforms is near-perfect, although there are a few features that only appear on limited platforms. Clients are available for Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS and Android, alongside a fully featured web interface. ![]()

The typical platform nests sometimes reach sizes of more than 6 feet in diameter and 3 feet deep, as seen with the larger black-necked and jabiru storks. In some storks, the legs act as a radiator to aid in cooling down the stork’s body during extreme heat marabou storks deposit urates on their legs (in birds, urates are urine and feces combined). Nature has a good purpose for those long legs, of course: they allow the stork to take long strides and wade into deep water or tall grasses and reeds in search of food. The legs vary in shades of black, gray, or orange. Storks have a dignified appearance, standing graceful and tall or marching deliberately on slender legs. Some storks also use their feathers in displays, like the woolly-necked stork that has feathers to puff out around its throat like a ruffed collar. In the scavenger species, this is thought to prevent feathers from getting stuck together with blood or mud, but the bare places are also used to impress, becoming more brightly colored during breeding season. Some storks have bare patches on their head and neck. They stretch their neck out and dangle their legs behind them as they fly, making them recognizable even from far away. They fly mostly by soaring on warm air currents, with long, broad wings that only flap occasionally. Individuals of some species are slate gray, while others sport white, red, and black. They range in size from the small hammerkop, at about 2 feet tall (56 centimeters), to the looming marabou stork at nearly 5 feet in height (1.5 meters). The stately stork: Stork. The system comes in components that must be assembled, which isn’t difficult once you decipher the instructions. The operating mechanism, enclosed in a weather resistant plastic box, is a reel that winds up a length of fish line to lift the door open at the rate of 1 inch per 5 seconds and closes the door by feeding out the line at the same rate. The pull-cord VSB Doorkeeper comes in three sizes to accommodate every backyard flock owner, from keepers of the smallest chickens to those keeping turkeys or geese. The grand-daddy of automatic chicken doors is the German-made VSB Doorkeeper. Ducks are especially notorious for hiding their eggs if not confined during their morning laying hours. On the other hand, the ability to delay opening with a timer is handy if you have chicken predators lurking at dawn waiting for the door to open, or you want to keep your birds in until they finish laying. A disadvantage to using a timed evening closing is that you have to constantly reset the time as daylight hours lengthen or shorten throughout the year. If this adjustment is not enough for your situation, most automatic chicken doors have a timer option that lets you program what times you want the door to open and close. Some doors have a mechanism that allows additional adjustment. Opening and closing times can be slightly adjusted by placing the sensor where it gets more sun - so the door opens a little earlier and closes a little later - or more shade - so the door opens a little later and closes a little earlier. A security lamp or back porch light, or even a light shining through the coop window at night, can cause the sensor to think it’s daytime. The sensor must receive light during the day - ideally on a west facing wall (toward the setting sun) - and be in the dark at night. A daylight sensor automatically opens the door at dawn and closes it at dusk. This table lists pophole sizes and overall frame dimensions for the doors mentioned in this review.Īutomatic chicken doors are triggered by either a daylight sensor or a timer. Some of the door manufacturers offer a solar battery charger as an option, which is ideal for off-grid use or for pastured birds in portable housing. You might choose to use a rechargeable battery, or you might opt for a solar charger. Like a wall plug, the battery should be located outside the birds’ living area or up on a small shelf near the ceiling where birds can’t roost on top of it. If you are off grid, or your coop has no electricity and you’re tempted to (unsafely!) run extension cords from your house to your coop, a battery is the better option. This feature allows the same door to be battery operated. Plug-in doors use an adapter that converts 120-volt AC household current to 12-volt DC current. Protect the cables from curious birds by enclosing them in a wall-mount snap-cover wiring conduit. You’ll need to ensure that the electrical cables are long enough to reach the outlet. If you opt for a plug-in model, install the outlet either outside the birds’ living area or at ceiling height to prevent birds from landing on and possibly dislodging the plug. Some automatic chicken doors are designed to be plugged into a standard 120-volt household outlet. ![]() ![]() The table below lists pophole sizes and overall frame dimensions for the doors mentioned in this review. The overall frame size may not be important for a full-size henhouse, but can be a significant issue for a narrow coop or one with low overhead. Our 11-inch wide popholes work fine for Royal Palm turkeys and Bourbon Red hens, but when our Bourbon tom matured he had to be coaxed into squeezing through the pophole. A smaller opening is suitable for bantam chickens and lighter-breed chickens or ducks, while a larger size is needed for heavier geese and turkeys. A 12-inch wide by 15-inch high pophole is ideal for most chickens, guineas, ducks, and lighter breeds of turkeys and geese. Regarding size, consider both the pophole size and the overall frame size. Once you decide to install an automatic chicken door, some of the things to consider are its size, its source of power, and how it’s triggered to open and close. Luckily, skillful designers now offer ready-built doors that work right out of the box. Not everyone has the skill, or the time, to tinker. Some people are handy enough to make their own automatic chicken doors, and you can find all manner of instructions on the internet - some ingenious, some flaky, and some downright dangerous. An automatic chicken door is indispensable if you’re not always there to let your backyard chickens out in the morning and close them in at night to secure them from predators. ![]() ![]() Leigh Broadhurst, an expert in environmental remediation and trace elements in the environment and food supply, said, “All of the health benefits you’ve ever heard attributed to plant foods-from blueberries to broccoli to garlic-can be contained in a single pollen basket.” Indeed, Broadhurst is right. At this stage, the pollen has been turned into the super nutritious, probiotic staple of the honeybee’s diet, “bee bread.” Pollen for Nutrition, Health, and WellnessĬ. These added ingredients start breaking down and fermenting the pollen, making it digestible for the bees. These house bees further mix the pollen with more saliva (containing enzymes from the bee’s stomach) and nectar. The saliva and a bit of nectar moisten the pollen grains and help them keep together, and the tiny hairs on the bee’s leg help hold the granule in place.īack in the hive, house bees help the foragers unload the pollen into cells of honeycomb. With forelegs moistened with saliva, she combs the pollen that collects on her fuzzy body and pushes it into a tiny cavity on the outside of each hind leg. On each trip from the hive, a forager bee collecting pollen will visit between ten and one hundred flowers, and will make up to twenty trips per day. It takes approximately one million collection trips out of the hive to gather this annual supply.īees collect pollen on separate trips from nectar-collecting excursions, visiting flowers that have the most nutritious and easiest to collect pollens, which can be different from the best flowers for collecting nectar. In one year, a hive of bees consumes about 75 pounds (34 kg) of pollen. Because the queen can lay up to 1,500 eggs a day in the early summer, there can be as many as 30,000 (!) developing larvae requiring protein to grow into bees. Pollen is the source of all protein, fat, vitamins, and trace elements in the honeybee’s diet, and it is fed to both the adult bees in the hive as well as the developing larvae. ![]() Pollen is important for plants, but it’s also crucial for bees. From a distance, the varied colors and textures of the grains blend together, but close up it’s easy to see a wide range of colors. Looking at a collection of pollen granules reminds me of looking closely at sand. It also means that each pollen granule that bees bring back to the hive is uniform in color. This evolutionary adaptation means that bees will bring apple blossom pollen to another apple blossom, where it is needed for pollination, and not a rose, where it will do no good. When forager bees leave the hive to collect pollen, they are very faithful to one type of flower on each visit, never visiting different flowering plants on the same trip. The plants provide nutrient-rich pollen and sweet nectar, and in turn, the bees’ hairy bodies and behaviors efficiently transfer pollen from flower to flower. Certain flowering plants have developed in a way that’s attractive and beneficial to bees in a process of coevolution. ![]() Grains of pollen are a plant’s male sex cells, and wind or insects carry the grains from one flower to another, ensuring genetic diversity. Is there really a need for something in between? To see for ourselves, we bought a BIC Hybrid Comfort 3 and put it to the test. Disposables have their place, as do typical refillable razors. To be honest, it’s a strange niche to try to fill. Meanwhile, it’s an upgrade from typical disposable razors, including better grip, three blades, and a pivoting head. Once you are done with the cartridges, you can toss the entire handle and then get a new one. Technically it’s a disposable razor but instead of tossing the entire thing at once, you change out the razor head like a normal reusable razor. Somewhere in between those two points is the BIC Hybrid Comfort 3. They serve their purpose, but most people wouldn’t want to use them as an everyday razor. Of course, they are as basic as shaving gets and are designed for a single use and then to be tossed. These, you can get in packs of five for $1. On the other end of the spectrum are the extremely cheap disposables. It’s not unusual to pay $3-4 for a cartridge on some of the fancier razors that also have a lot of bells and whistles you might not want. I will probably be reviewing the Gillette Sensor 2 and Schick ST2 next.Let’s face it. I will eventually do another few shaves with each one individually and see if my opinion of each one changes. Though I do give it props because it is doing exactly what it is meant to be doing. The hydrating gel in the Hydro 3 for me, like I said earlier, was just WAY to much in my opinion. I chose it because I personally liked the way that the head moved compared to the Hydro 3, and it did not leave a lot if any hydrating gel on my face. So overall they both did pretty well, but personally I would have to give it to the Mach 3. I had some trouble with this one, as I felt that I needed to push down somewhat to get the head to begin to pivot and move around some of the curves of my face, while the Mach 3 I did not have to push or do anything at all to get the head to pivot. The Hydro 3 has where pivoting action moves along a circular track. The head pivoted very easily as I was moving it along my face. Head Movement: The pivot point on the Mach 3 is down near the bottom of the cartridge. But that is what I felt after doing a pass with each razor. Though personally, as long as the soap/cream is doing its job I don't think that it should matter. While the Mach 3 you could not feel much if any hydration. It was enough to where you could take your fingers and feel/see gel come off your face in a small string. Personally, I though that the Hydro 3 had a little too much of the hydrating gel. Hydration: By far without a doubt the Hydro 3 had much more than the Mach 3. But to me they were so close that there is the possibility that they were pretty much the same. Afterwards though, subsequent passes were really smooth with the Hydro I believe being smoother since it has more hydration gel in the hydrating pad.Ĭloseness: At the end of the first pass I felt like maybe the Mach 3 had gotten just ever so slightly closer than the Hydro 3. Smoothness: When they both first touch my skin and cut for the first time, there was barely a slight tug from the Mach 3 and a tug that was mostly the same but slightly more noticeable from the Hydro 3. ![]() For my shaving cream I used Old Spice Original with the Omega 10066 Boar Hair brush. So here is how each razor stacks up to one another: I shaved one half of my face with each razor.
